FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What age of dog is mantrailing suitable for?

Mantrailing is suitable for all ages of dogs from puppies to golden oldies. The trail can be tailored to them.

My dog is dog reactive, can I still take part?

Yes! Dogs are worked indiviually so there will be no other dogs around when yours is working. You many want to consider signing up for sessions that are at private venues rather than public as this reduces the chance of other dogs.

My dog is people reactive, can I still take part?

Yes! Although this will be managed carefully by bringing someone you (and your dog) knows with you, to minimise interaction with other people until confidence can be built. Please get in touch to discuss your dog's needs and then we can look to accomodate.

What equipment do I need?

  • For yourself it is advisable to have strong, sturdy footwear such as walking boots to avoid slipping. Sessions take place in all weathers so waterproofs and warmth is a must for winter! You will also need a scent article in a bag such a bobble hat.

  • Dogs will need - harness, flat collar (no chains), lead and long line.

  • You will also need at least two small pots to put food rewards in.

What rewards should I bring?

The stinkier the better! It should be something your dog doesn't get at any other time. Some tuna, wet cat food, cheese, hot dogs are all good choices!

You can also bring your dogs favourite toy but initially we will most likely use food.

How long does my dog have to wait in the car/van?

There are generally four dog/handler teams in a session with one team working at a time. Another handler will be hiding, another has the option of observing and the fourth handler has this time to get their dog out on lead if appropriate and suitable. Dogs will be working for a quarter of the session time, with the potential for their handler to get them out for another quarter of the time.
